Some of the Questions I've Been Asked By Individuals Before

What's the difference between counselling and psychotherapy?

It's confusing isn't it? Simply, not all counsellors are psychotherapists but all psychotherapists are counsellors. The main difference is psychotherapists will work with your past and history to help you in the present whereas a counsellor mainly works in the present with your current difficulties. Psychotherapists can do that too if you want them too.

What if I don't need all those sessions? It costs a lot of money!

I offer review sessions every 6-8 weeks, this gives us chance to check in, see how you feel in yourself - it may be at this point you would like to stop the sessions, and that is okay! You can always return at a later date if you want. It could be that we get to the end of our agreed sessions and you feel you need more, we can discuss this at the review stage.

Therapy can be expensive so if its a case of money stopping you in your journey then please discuss this with me - there may be something we can work out together as I offer concessionary rates, spaces for people receiving benefits and block bookings which offer a discount too.

Can we work on different things? I have more than just one problem.

Absolutely - nothing in our lives is as straight forward as having one problem. Often through our sessions we will find ourselves interweaving between different issues in your life as most often they will fuel each other. I've had people before say they weren't expecting us to discuss that issue and find it amazing how it came up when talking about something else and how it helped to know how the issues fit together.

How long till I am fixed/better/ok? Will it Work?

A hard question to answer as there is really no answer. I don't believe that anyone is broken, so how can I fix something that isn't broken? I help you to feel healed, at peace with yourself. This can take time and the time to feel better in yourself may be different to your friends and family who may have had therapy and that's okay and completely normal.

The question - will it work - this will depend on what you want from therapy and sessions - if it's a quick fix in an hour, then no, I'm afraid it won't. If you are wanting therapy to give you insight and ways to cope with anxiety for instance, then it will work if you want it to.

Have you had therapy? How do you know what it's like for me?

I am comfortable to say that I had extensive therapy sessions and sometimes go back to therapy when I am struggling. I feel it is important all people in a helping profession have their own therapy to make sure they are in a good place to provide support. This is how I know what it's like to choose a therapist and how daunting the process of starting therapy can be. The best advice I can say to this is take your time in finding a therapist who best suits you and don't be afraid to ask questions or state what you need.
